Candida is a common term for a group of yeast called the Candida albicans that frequently affect the skin. The yeast usually lives in the body and in small numbers. It normally resides in the intestinal tract, mouth, and throat. Its population is controlled by immune system however, if the bacteria are killed by antibiotics or if a person’s immune system weakens, the population of Candida increases and infection may occur. If an infection is left untreated the result could be endocarditis or inflammation of the heart’s inner layer, nephritis or kidney inflammation, meningitis or the inflammation of the protective membrances of the spinal cord and brain.
In order to stop a Candida infection from spreading, thus preventing any future complications, several treatment options are available. The first thing to do is avoid eating foods that have are rich in sugar or carbohydrates and gluten grains since Candida’s main source of food is sugar. Additionally, eliminate any foods that contain yeast or has been fermented with yeast as this supports the growth of Candida.
Some examples of the foods to avoid are black tea, bread, anything containing vinegar, alcohol, stock cubes, and yeast extract. To strengthen the immune system, eat the right foods, like those high in protein and that contain the good saturated fats and oils. Eat salad, poultry, meat, fish, and plenty of fresh vegetables. Take a vitamin and essential mineral supplement that contains no sugar or yeast. Talk to your doctor if you are currently taking steroids, antibiotics, or ulcer medications to determine how to avoid the development of a Candida infection.
Preventing Candida can be easy if you follow a proper diet, maintain a healthy lifestyle, and take supplements that will support the friendly bacteria in the body. If these guidelines are followed, then the infections will slowly disappear and you should start recovering.
